Trike-A-Thon participants at First United Methodist Preschool learned safety lessons and gave hope to kids battling cancer at St. Jude

First United Methodist Preschool raises approximately $1,500.00 for the kids of St. Jude

First United Methodist Prescool participated in the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program and raised approximately $1,500.00 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, the premier center for the research and treatment of childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

More than 80 children participated in this fun, week-long program while learning riding-toy safety lessons and raising money for St. Jude. The week ended with the participants bringing their trikes and riding-toys to school and practicing the rules they learned. The Havelock community sponsored participants by pledging an amount-per-lap the children rode or a one-time donation.

“It’s fun to see the children get excited about learning,” said Lorraine Greer, Preschool Director and coordinator of the event. “They love the interactive lessons that feature characters, Bikewell Bear® and Pedals the Bunny. The St. Jude Trike-A-Thon also gives me the opportunity to teach the children valuable safety lessons while also helping children who are battling cancer.”

Upon completion of the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon the children won prizes ranging from Trike-A-Thon T-shirts to Bikewell Bear or Pedals the Bunny plush toys.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization, through events such as Trike-A-Thon. For more information, please visit www.stjude.org.

Local Preschoolers Caring for Children with Cancer

Havelock, North Carolina April 9th 2011 Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is a not-for-profit organization committed to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancers. Through local bake sales, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer provides the inspiration and support for individuals, communities, and businesses to help fight pediatric cancer.

Our cookie sales were at both Food Lions in Havelock, NC the morning of April 9th with FUMP Faculty and Board members.  Several Parents came the day before to help us prepare our cookies for the big sale.  The school smelled delicious all day we could not wait to share them.

The first Cookies for Kids’ Cancer bake sale was held in December 2007, when the mom of a young child with cancer decided to have an enormous bake sale where she and others would sell 96,000 cookies to raise money to help fund a pediatric cancer treatment in development. With the help of more than 250 volunteers, all 96,000 cookies were baked and sold in just three weeks. The bake sale raised over $400,000. From the support the first bake sale received, the idea to create an organization for people to hold their own bake sales came to life with the creation of a national organization.

Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is not about one child or one type of pediatric cancer. It is about changing the facts of pediatric cancer for the better, forever. Childhood cancers are the number one disease killer of children – more than asthma, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and pediatric AIDS combined. Nearly 13,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Survivors of childhood cancer face a broad range of physical and psychological challenges imposed by the disease, and some will suffer its long-term effects for the rest of their lives. Despite all these statistics, there has not been a new drug developed specifically for pediatric cancer in 20 years.

Together we can raise the funds and awareness necessary to change the face of pediatric cancer research and to provide more families and children with the hope they deserve. Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is committed to raising the funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancer. Make the future of pediatric cancers something more than a scary statistic. Join the fight because every child deserves a chance to live their dreams.

Time to Celebrate . . . FUMP Read 100 Books
At the start of the school year each classroom was introduced to our library pro-gram. Every week, and some times almost every day, students were able to check out books from the FUMP library. Ms. Caryn, our Pro-grams Coordinator, challenged the students and families to read 100 books at home. As we all know reading to your child at least 20 minutes a day helps promote strong literacy and reading development in young children. After reading each storybook , students created a picture or poster illustrating the story, all in our efforts to help our children build a love of reading at the very earliest of ages.
Well, we are excited to announce that the FUMP children have reached their goal of 100 Books Read. In reward for this wonderful accomplishment, we will be celebrating with an pep rally in the Sanctuary and a pizza party to follow in the class-rooms. We will honor all those who participated and also those who had out-standing contributions to this challenge.

Now we will focus on a new challenge for continued reading by partnering with Scholastic Book Clubs. For every 10 books a child reads, we will post it with Scholas-tic and they will donate one (1) book to a child/family in need and who does not have access to books at home. Also by purchasing books from the “Reach Out and Read” catalog, for every parent order Scholastic will again donate one (1) to a needy family. Please help our FUMP Children with this new mission project focused on children helping children.
Congratulations!
